MUSIC MEETS BERLIN INDUSTRY

Berlin‘s industry is varied, innovative, and has its very own sound. Together with the producer Sam Shure, we visited high-tech industrial locations and digitalized their sounds and harmonized them to the beat that is Berlin – the beat of innovation.

It became a daytrip to Berlin’s industrial landscape as seen through an artist’s eye. At times delicate and powerful like the motorbikes from the BMW plant in Spandau, at times efficient and harmonious like the smart building technology from Kieback&Peter, at times sharp as a blade like the products of Gillette.

The connection was obvious for the music producer and DJ Sam Shure: “The industrial sounds can be used on many levels within an audio production for percussion, drums, atmosphere or effects for example. The repetitive processes of industrial production have a very rhythmic quality, which I can incorporate into songs.”

These latest productions for the industry campaign of the 16 partners (Bayer, B. Braun Melsungen, Berliner Seilfabrik, BMW Motorrad Werk Berlin, BTB, Clean Tech Business Park Marzahn, Deutsche Bahn, Gillette, Kieback&Peter, Laserline, Knorr-Bremse, Otis, Pfizer, Siemens, Vattenfall und Wall) celebrated their premiere September 2, 2020 at the Berlin Urban Tech Summit.

Why is the company involved in the industry campaign?
Berliner Seilfabrik has been involved in the industry campaign since it began over 10 years ago, because it is important to us to strengthen the location and to make all facets of this city visible. This also includes manufacturing and medium-sized family businesses.

Why is Berlin the right location for the company?
Berlin is where we have our roots. Our family business "grew up" here, so leaving was never an option for us. What's more, our company name also makes Berlin the natural choice for our home. Q&A

Why is the company involved in the industry campaign?
Siemens was founded in Berlin more than 170 years ago. As early as the end of the 19th century, the development of Siemensstadt had begun, a district that has borne the company's name ever since. Berlin is still the largest industrial location for Siemens worldwide. The company has therefore been a partner of the city from the very beginning and has always seen itself as such. This is now clearly evident in the development of the new Siemensstadt, where we plan to develop a previously enclosed industrial area the size of ten soccer pitches into a modern and open urban district. This further development of Siemensstadt is also taking place within the framework of a very co-operative partnership; both with the authorities concerned, the appropriate city and local committees and with the residents and citizens of Berlin – all as Berlin partners.

Why is Berlin the right location for the company?
Just like Berlin, Siemensstadt² will create connections. Between yesterday, today and tomorrow. Between work and life. Between science, education, research and development.  Between Berlin and the world.

Q&A

What is produced at the Berlin site?
Environmentally-friendly urban heating, district cooling and electricity

Why is the company involved in the industry campaign?
Berlin wants to be an innovative and sustainable industrial location and has set itself high climate targets. The industry campaign highlights the city's partners who are helping to make these goals a reality. As an energy supplier, we are making a significant contribution to the achieving of CO2 savings. To do this, we have to manage an enormous change and it is important that the industry campaign creates visibility for this. Why? Because it's now all about doing rather than talking – and that's the hard bit.

Why is Berlin the right location for the company?
Berlin has set itself high climate targets and other cities will follow this example. We are proud to already be able to reliably supply around 1.3 million residential units in Berlin with environmentally-friendly municipal heating, with 100 percent of our heat being produced locally. Our Berlin city heating system is also an important lever for the climate-neutral capital of the future. Everyone connected to our network benefits from our progress towards a completely fossil-free supply of energy and heat. The decarbonisation of urban heating is a real challenge, especially because of the limited possibilities regarding the integration of renewable energy sources. In order for us to be successful here, collaboration with strong partners is essential. If Berlin succeeds, it will not only be a model for other German cities, but for cities far beyond the Federal Republic.

Q&A

What is produced at the Berlin site?
Our Berlin site also includes the production plant in Velten. The plant is an international development and production site for digital advertising media and automatic toilets. Analogue advertising media and other innovative street furniture products for the German market are also manufactured there to the very highest quality. Our products are subject to the standards for environmental, social and economic sustainability upheld by service providers, suppliers and Wall itself.

Why is the company involved in the industry campaign?
Wall GmbH has been a part of Berlin and the Berlin business landscape since 1984. Our products such as street furniture, advertising media and toilets make public spaces throughout Germany more liveable. This means that a small piece of Berlin can also be found in around 50 German cities. With our contribution to the industry campaign, we are showing that the quality of products from Berlin speaks for the location both in Germany and worldwide.

Why is Berlin the right location for the company?
Berlin is a metropolis. A place where global trends such as urbanisation, growing mobility and digitalisation are a reality. As a specialist in street furniture and outdoor advertising, Wall responds with technological and sustainable solutions to make urban space more liveable for people. The technologies developed and tested at Wall in Berlin go on to be used by other European cities and companies and to shape their urbanisation.

Q&A

What is produced at the Berlin site?
Bayer's supply centre in Berlin specialises in the production and packaging of sterile liquid dosage forms, such as X-ray contrast media. More than 1000 employees ensure around-the-clock care for our patients in over 130 countries worldwide. A further production facility for novel therapeutics is currently being built, from which clinical trials will be supplied and initial market supply handled. The heart of this plant is a production line equipped with robots, which guarantees the highest product and hygiene standards. For this reason, Bayer is establishing a global competence centre for aseptic production at its Berlin site.

Why is the company involved in the industry campaign?
It is important to Bayer to strengthen Berlin as an industrial location and to support it in works of benefit to the public. With more than 5,000 employees, we develop tomorrow's treatments in the heart of Berlin and supply patients worldwide with urgently needed medicines. The collaboration with the partners in the Berlin Health Cluster offers an excellent environment for this and we are proud to make our contribution to an economically strong Berlin.

Why is Berlin the right location for the company?
Berlin provides Bayer with an excellent scientific environment, a unique clinical research landscape and proximity to decision-makers throughout the healthcare system. This gives Berlin a special level of health expertise which we value highly. Berlin is not only an attractive place for founding start-ups and recruiting talent, but also for innovative research and development.
