Q&A
Why is the company involved in the industry campaign?
Siemens was founded in Berlin more than 170 years ago. As early as the end of the 19th century, the development of Siemensstadt had begun, a district that has borne the company's name ever since. Berlin is still the largest industrial location for Siemens worldwide. The company has therefore been a partner of the city from the very beginning and has always seen itself as such. This is now clearly evident in the development of the new Siemensstadt, where we plan to develop a previously enclosed industrial area the size of ten soccer pitches into a modern and open urban district. This further development of Siemensstadt is also taking place within the framework of a very co-operative partnership; both with the authorities concerned, the appropriate city and local committees and with the residents and citizens of Berlin – all as Berlin partners.
Why is Berlin the right location for the company?
Just like Berlin, Siemensstadt² will create connections. Between yesterday, today and tomorrow. Between work and life. Between science, education, research and development. Between Berlin and the world.
Q&A
What is produced at the Berlin site?
Environmentally-friendly urban heating, district cooling and electricity
Why is the company involved in the industry campaign?
Berlin wants to be an innovative and sustainable industrial location and has set itself high climate targets. The industry campaign highlights the city's partners who are helping to make these goals a reality. As an energy supplier, we are making a significant contribution to the achieving of CO2 savings. To do this, we have to manage an enormous change and it is important that the industry campaign creates visibility for this. Why? Because it's now all about doing rather than talking – and that's the hard bit.
Why is Berlin the right location for the company?
Berlin has set itself high climate targets and other cities will follow this example. We are proud to already be able to reliably supply around 1.3 million residential units in Berlin with environmentally-friendly municipal heating, with 100 percent of our heat being produced locally. Our Berlin city heating system is also an important lever for the climate-neutral capital of the future. Everyone connected to our network benefits from our progress towards a completely fossil-free supply of energy and heat. The decarbonisation of urban heating is a real challenge, especially because of the limited possibilities regarding the integration of renewable energy sources. In order for us to be successful here, collaboration with strong partners is essential. If Berlin succeeds, it will not only be a model for other German cities, but for cities far beyond the Federal Republic.
